THE IME FROM A PHYSICIAN'S PERSPECTIVE
Kevin L. Scott, MD, Independent Medical Evaluation Company

This presentation will provide an in-depth look at the Independent Medical Examination (IME) from a physician’s perspective, outlining key aspects of an effective IME practice. It will cover the physician’s goals during the evaluation, necessary equipment, and essential pre-examination preparations. Additionally, it will detail a structured approach to Schedule Loss of Use (SLU), Degree of Disability (DOD), Restrictions, and Apportionment. A live shoulder exam demonstration will also be conducted to highlight best practices in clinical assessment.

Dr. Kevin Scott is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in minimally invasive spine surgery. A Fellow of both the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons, he is currently on staff at Tampa General Hospital and Legacy Surgery Center. With over two decades of military service in the U.S. Army (1982–2005), Dr. Scott achieved the rank of Major and served as Chief Orthopaedic Surgeon at the 48th Combat Support Hospital in Afghanistan and Guthrie Ambulatory at Ft. Drum, NY. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Ft. Wayne Medical Education and further honed his expertise with a fellowship in minimally invasive spine surgery at the Laser Spine Institute. Dr. Scott is dedicated to providing advanced surgical care to help patients regain mobility and improve their quality of life.

CREATING INCLUSIVE SPACES FOR LGBTQ+ CLIENTS
Alicia L. Loomis, Esq., MCV Law

Beginning with a foundational "LGBTQ+ 101" overview, participants will gain insights into gender identity and expression, learn current LGBTQ+ terminology, and explore simple ideas to create a welcoming environment. We will cover best practices for working with LGBTQ+ clients, from the initial intake to navigating sensitive topics with empathy and professionalism. Participants will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to provide an inclusive, affirming, and welcoming space for their clients. 

Alicia Loomis is a personal injury attorney with MCV Law in Syracuse, NY representing primarily injured workers in third-party claims and motor vehicle accident victims. Alicia earned degrees in music from the Eastman School of Music and Ithaca College and taught junior/senior high vocal music for ten years. She then shifted gears and graduated magna cum laude from Syracuse University College of Law in 2019. Alicia is the Vice President of the Central New York Women's Bar Association and a member of the LGBTQ+ Law Section of the New York State Bar Association. She is the Assistant Director and enjoys singing in the Syracuse Gay and Lesbian Chorus. Alicia lives in Manlius, NY with her spouse, Jerra, their five children, and three dogs.

LEGAL PERSPECTIVE ON MEDICAL TREATMENT IN WORKERS' COMPENSATION

A review of current best practices and proposed changes regarding medical treatment in workers’ compensation.

Sam Feuerstein is a partner at Hurwitz, Whitcher & Molloy where he has been practicing since 2014. He has been practicing workers’ compensation law since 2010, initially representing Special Funds and insurance companies. He is the current Chair of the Erie County Bar Association’s Workers’ Compensation Committee. Sam has presented extensively on medical treatment issues in workers’ compensation, and has also spoken to carrier groups regarding various issues including the importance of communication.
